Well this was an old post from back when Songs for Oprah was going strong. For those of you who are new fans or don’t know what that project was all about, here’s the low down.
I woke up one morning at around 3 AM and had this idea that I had to create music on a regular schedule, create a purpose behind it, and spread it out, grow support for it and give money I earned from selling the songs to charity. As my brain was scrambling with all these thoughts, I decided I must target this toward someone successful and philanthropic, who’s attention I could grab. No other name came into my head than Oprah.
I’ve got a ton of respect for Oprah, and I really admire all she’s done and continues to do with her platform. So I set my eyes on her. If I could gain her attention and possibly get her support, then I could accomplish all the things I’ve wanted to do since being a little kid. That being, touch people, do good in the world, and give as much back as I possibly can.
So there I was, 3 AM…grab my notebook and jot down the idea, what the schedule will look like, what the songs will be about and on that inspiration I write the first song right then and there. In hindsight, it’s not that great of a tune, but it spoke to all the feelings that were bouncing around. It was called “Passion Doesn’t Mean A Thing.” The idea was that just to have a passion or dream, doesn’t mean a thing without taking action. It reflected my own frustrations with not taking bold enough strides in life I imagine.
So anyhow, the project was planned for 52 weeks, with a new song and music video every week and an email to Oprah with a link to the song/video, a brief overview of that songs message of hope, positivity, world struggle, or whatever the theme was, and then again a recap of my mission statement and why I was seeking her help and what I hoped to do through this project to give something back to those in need. I ended up making it through 23 weeks and then lost my steam I guess.
There were a whole host of things going on within my personal life and my own frustrations and doubts as to the viability of my silly idea, 23 weeks prior…who would really care about Songs for Oprah?! I hadn’t ever heard a word from her show, which of course I know now is normal, and that had discouraged me at some point early on. Without going on much longer and boring you
…you can still snag lots of free music and other stuff from me just by becoming a fan. Just put your name and email in the form and presto-kazam, you’ll have some tunes to download and listen to.
Okay, so that’s a brief rundown of what was, what will be is yet to be known…but stay tuned!
